World Prematurity Day (observed on 17 November each year) is a global movement to raise awareness of premature birth and the sometimes devastating impact it can have on families.
Preterm birth happens when the baby is born before the 37th week of pregnancy is over. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 15 million preterm births occur globally each year, and the number is constantly rising.
In support of World Prematurity Day, Uzwela Foundation visited the governmental hospital, Tembisa Hospital, based in Tembisa, a large township situated to the north of Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa.
Uzwela’s ambassador, Cayla van Eeden and one of our directors, Elize van Eeden, handed over 72 blankets & gifts to the nursing staff of the Neonatal ward to distribute to the Preemies and their mommies.
